| Charles Reid is a painter with a loose, yet controlled style. He first does a contour drawing of the subject (and discourages students from making 'sketchy' lines). He lays paint on the paper with a minimum of mixing on the palette. Colours are 'worked out' on the paper with the occasional addition of a new colour as the paint is flowing. When it all comes together, the result is a picture in which colours have been allowed to mix themselves to a degree, and there is a freshness and lightness in the work. On the first 2 mornings, Reid did a demonstration painting from a live model. On the third day he worked from a black and white photograph. After lunch each day, students painted from the model, and from photographs they had brought. At the end of the day, each student was invited to put a piece of work up for criticism. Barb said of the experience: 'The 3 days left me with a wealth of new ideas and techniques to practice, and an inexplicable sense that I have been 'set free' to proceed without the old fears. I am particularly glad to understand lost and found edges.' Of Reid, she said: 'He has a high level of skill and accomplishment combined with a humble appreciation of his own abilities that makes his teaching style one of almost casual ease. This, and an ability to give encouragement just when it is needed.' The above paintings were painted by Barb Lock. |
